CATS Sample Changer
CATS – Cryogenic Automated Transfer System – is commercialised by IRELEC under CEA-CNRS licence.
Based on an industrial 6-axis robotic arm and control system, this sample changer offers an extended versatility, adapted to the various standards and requirements of X-ray crystallography.
Design features :
CATS enables automatic handling of cryogenic samples, mounted on SPINE sample holders or similar magnetic caps.
The system is designed to automatically swap between the different standards of baskets. It is compatible with EMBL/ESRF magazines, with other standards widely used in Europe and with the American Universal Puck Standard.
The storage Dewar offers a high capacity of 9 magazines, i.e. up to 100 sample holders.
This sample changer can easily be integrated into the beamline control system, as its API gives access to high level commands which are sent through TCP/IP sockets. EPICS compatibility has been demonstrated.
Additional feature:
Thanks to its 6-axis configuration, CATS can handle crystallisation plates. It offers extended commands for screening and exposing each well. In this mode, the beamline fast shutter can be directly controlled by CATS and synchronised with the plates rotations.
